The Carpet Series

TEXTILES & RESEARCH

The Carpet Series is a tribute to the skills of Tibetan carpet weavers exiled in India. To create this collection, we study the traditional Tibetan designs and functions of the carpets, as well as the artisanal methods with which they are produced.

At our workshop, we found that discussions about aesthetics and technological issues often gave way to a more complex question: What is the role of craft in a society undergoing rapid change?

We are exploring this issue during production. As we design and create this ongoing series, we are also pondering the means by which craftsmanship enriches society. What can we learn from this craft, and what influence is it having on our way of seeing, thinking, creating and doing?

The Carpet Series will consist of a series of carpets as well as a visual research document.
